Research Description1. Functional Data Analysis
Functional data analysis (FDA) addresses the analysis of information on curves or functions. As an example, FDA can be useful for analyzing growth curves of children that are constructed based on body height measurements made over some specific growing period. In this example, FDA would treat one growth curve as one functional data entity. Without any assumption on the parametric forms for growth curves, the discrete measurements for body heights can be transferred into a continuous curve by nonparametric smoothing. With FDA we study many important features of curves such as growth rates, which are derivatives of growth curves. In fact, it is the many uses of derivatives that are the central theme of FDA. Topics in FDA include:

1). Curve Registration: Align multiple curves with similar shapes by transformation in the time domain.

2). Functional Principal Component analysis: Finding major variations among multiple curves.

3). Functional Linear Models: Estimating relationships between functions.

4). Estimating Differential Equations from real data: including ordinary, partial, or stochastic differential equations.

5). Estimating Constrained Functions: The constraints can be positive functions, or strictly monotone functions, etc.

2. Estimating Dynamic Models from noisy data
Dynamic models, usually written in forms of differential equations (DEs), describe the rate of change (expressed as derivatives) of a process defined in time, space, or some other continuum. They are widely used in medicine, engineering, ecology and a host of other areas. For example, in classical mechanics, the motion of an object is described in terms of its position, velocity (the first derivative of the position function) and acceleration (the second derivative of the position function) as time varies. Newton`s Laws of motion use DEs to relate the position, velocity, acceleration and forces that act on an object.

Very few real-world DEs can be solved analytically, and numerical approximation is almost always the only option in the large and realistic world of nonlinear DEs. The DE solutions can be very sensitive to DE parameters and initial values of DE components. One central and difficult problem is how to estimate DE parameters from noisy data available throughout an interval. In the field of engineering, this is called the system identification problem.

The system identification problem is not new. When DEs have analytical solutions, this problem is essentially nonlinear regression (Bates and Watts 1988). However, most DEs are not analytically solvable. Bock (1981, 1983) proposes a multiple shooting method for estimating DEs, which partitions the whole interval into segments and applies a nonlinear optimization procedure over each segment. Himmelblau et al. (1967) integrate DEs by numerical quadrature and convert DEs to nonlinear equations. De Boor and Swartz (1973) use piecewise polynomial functions to approximate DE solutions by collocation, i.e., by the requirement that piecewise polynomial functions satisfy DEs at some fixed points. Ramsay and Silverman (2005) estimate the derivatives of the underlying curves by nonparametric smoothing and then estimate DE parameters using standard nonlinear regression. Huang, Liu, and Wu (2005) use a Bayesian approach, numerically solving DEs when updating DE parameters.

Recently Ramsay and his team have developed the generalized profiling method to estimate DEs. The idea is to approximate DE solutions with nonparametric curves, which are estimated by penalized smoothing with DE-defined penalty. The method has several unique aspects: First, the computation load for estimation is much lower than those traditional methods. It only takes less or about one minute in all examples we have worked; Second, the optimization surface is much smoother when approximating DE solutions with smoothing curves, and hence it is easier to find the global minimum; Third, that the initial values of DE components can be estimated by evaluating the smoothing curves at the first point. The DE solutions with the estimated initial values tend to fit the data better; Fourthly, Missing DE components are also relatively easy to incorporate; Finally, standard errors and confidence intervals for DE parameter estimates can be obtained quickly. More details about this method can be found in our papers
